An Adirondack Prayer
(Three Months After Her Death)

Yesterday slipped away,

          steel grey,

but today I woke

          to the laughter of loons.

May their crazy cries carry me

          through the mist of mourning.

May I find that clearing

where the river slows and shallows,

changing from black satin

          to transparent gold.

There, I shall wade into its water

          to be blessed.
